Welcome to my CDF/Cal Fire Registry History Page. My name is Thomas Bertsch , and this is a short Historical perspective of my time with the organization. My Training, Assignments, Calls, Incidents and Adventures that I recall as vivid memories. My co-workers and friends often called me Michael .
My First Assignment with CDF began in : 1976. I Retired in : 1988
Assigned Work Locations : Kelsey Cobb FFS, Clearlake Oaks FFs, Wilbur Springs FFS, Leesville FFS, Spanish Flat FFS, Napa Station, Yountville Station, St Helena HQ, St Helena FFS.
Favorite Assignments : Yountville. As an FAE, I was proud enough to drive and operate the only Aerial Apparatus CDF had , at that time. I always arrived early, and left late! Schedule “A” Contract Napa County Fire. Napa and Yountville Stations.
Most Interesting Calls : As a seasoned professional city firefighter, I soon discovered I had a lot to learn about wildfire. 1st Season, 160,000 acre Fire in Humbolt County. Froze on duty for 46 days! Saving flood victims in 86 from a huey National Guard Copter!
My thoughts about my time with CDF and some Comments for those considering joining CDF/Cal Fire : Division of Forestry, Department of Forestry, CDF, Cal-Fire. Where I spent the most memorable times in my life. Put my life, in the hands of a selected few Fire Fighting Brothers, without reservation. Bonds that will last into eternity!
